Basalts are vertical columns of rock that began as liquid lava from eruptions that happened millions of years ago. This example began at the equator about 200 million years ago and as a result an arc of islands were formed. These islands migrated north, smashed into North America and formed mountain ranges in California and Oregon. This is my rendition of the basalt at the Devils Postpile National Monument in CA.
