March 11 The King

Background texture of gesso, i think....i wrote on the back what i used, glued it into the book and promptly forgot! I love textures such as this and try all sorts of products like gesso, caulk, gel medium and molding pastes. I sometimes spend an entire day (in the summertime) making one type of technique and dreaming up variations of it. I stamped into the still wet medium and added a piece of a net-like material on the bottom right. Elvis is on a grid of gyprock tape. The color is Lumiere paint and the gold is from a Pilot ink pen scraped over the high points.

Feb 27 Who, me?

Feb 26 A fisherwoman and her husband

I will admit when i first titled this it was " A fisherman and his wife" Then i looked at it and thought why? Just because the words flow easier? Theres no proof here that he caught those fish. Theres every bit as much chance that she caught them. In fact, she did! He got up from his nap and went looking for her because he was hungry and wanted his supper. So he found her and gallantly offered to carry her net and the only one she had so far managed to clean home. Shes carrying the heaviest load and he can't wait for her to clean them, after all, he's got a good appetite today! So, "hurry-up there little woman, get ye home and make my supper, you can always clean one for yourself later, and if you're good you can cook the other one for my breakfast tomorrow."

Feb 25 Who am i?

Ask me no questions and i'll tell you no lies.

Feb 24 Ahead of my time

I don't know; can't explain this except to say it reminds me of a t-shirt a friend used to wear that said
"some do, some don't,
some will, some won't,
I might.

Feb 23 "silent drift-away"

The background for this piece is an up-side-down painted paper towel. I painted as many different types and brands of paper towels as i could find as they all have a different pattern for the pressing of two thin plys together to make them strong. Some were easy to peel apart, others not so easy. Some only peeled apart after painting but most were separated beforehand. They become quite strong with the addition of the paints and inks. Many were dried and then painted again, and lots were dried again and then stamped. About 25% of them had the nicer patterns and colors on the reverse side and this was one of them. I liked the way the paint made a "skin" here and there on this one. I think it was caused by the random puddling of paint against the freezer paper on which they were layed to dry.

Feb 22 How do you look?

This collage went so far off from my original intention. I added so many layers that it isnt apparent anymore that the lady was set in between partially slit open flowers and feathers on the bottom layer. I dont often use stickers but thought these were quite nice; the sparkly flowers and butterfly, the bow and crown.

Feb 21 The Mona Lisa Jens

Another spin art background. Sometimes i find an interesting word or phrase that sparks the idea for the art and thats what happened here. Since i scanned it i've added gold pom-poms to the caps.

Feb 20 Oriental bonsai composition

I used to have a spin - art maker thing, just like the kind they used to have at the fair. You pin the paper onto the spinner and when its spinning you drop paint onto it. This one was made on sandwich paper and thin enough to show the oriental caligraphy under it. The image is a rubber stamp colored with Big and Juicy Mountain Meadow ink. The chop is my own, carved in marble by an amazing artisan when i was in China. I've forgotten which way is up so i use it any way that appeals to me at the moment.

Feb 19 The sign of the fishes

I am a Pisces and this pretty much demonstrates the way i am in alot of ways. I never know which way to go and i'm often pulling and fighting against myself. I see both sides of every issue and sometimes can't choose which one is best. It seems i consist of two people, and i often contradict myself. If i'm asked what my favorite color is i usually say blue but sometimes i say purple or pink or green and i mean it when i say it. I'm good and evil, stupid and smart, important and insignificant. I guess that makes me seem fickle. I had a friend once who said "i cant stand people who cant make decisions" Needless to say i didnt bother to call her anymore. If you want to hang out with me you have to understand this Pisces trait. We can't help it; it dosnt happen all the time, and when it does its basically harmless. If i saw a truck heading for me i could make a quick decision on which way to jump.

The fishes i added to this collage are from the newspaper and not sealed. I might protect them with gel medium but then again i might not...i might take my chances. I dont know what i want to do despite knowing that newspaper starts to disintegrate very fast and within a year they might be crisp and crumble off. What i do know is that i dont really like the look of gel medium covered images. I think i'd rather see them looking nice for a year than not-so-nice for 20 years.

What every self-respecting Pisces should know

Pisces Feb 19 - March 20 cover of book

This is the third piano - hinge book of my continuing project for Daily Devotions; 365 days of art. I brushed the cover with Pearl-X but dont know if it shows up as satiny/shiny.
I was getting bored with my old cardstock so bought a lot of new. It was nice choosing from all the many colors and this book was made with several different purples. Unfortunately i discovered too late that i've purchased a much more lightweight cs than what i like and usually work with. Its flimsy in comparison and i've cut some in half just by scoring with the bonefolder; it actually splits it! So, will have to be very careful. I'll make most of my art on other cs or heavier paper and glue it in and hopefully the hinges will hold it ok.
