March 11 The King

Background texture of gesso, i think....i wrote on the back what i used, glued it into the book and promptly forgot! I love textures such as this and try all sorts of products like gesso, caulk, gel medium and molding pastes. I sometimes spend an entire day (in the summertime) making one type of technique and dreaming up variations of it. I stamped into the still wet medium and added a piece of a net-like material on the bottom right. Elvis is on a grid of gyprock tape. The color is Lumiere paint and the gold is from a Pilot ink pen scraped over the high points.

Feb 26 A fisherwoman and her husband

I will admit when i first titled this it was " A fisherman and his wife" Then i looked at it and thought why? Just because the words flow easier? Theres no proof here that he caught those fish. Theres every bit as much chance that she caught them. In fact, she did! He got up from his nap and went looking for her because he was hungry and wanted his supper. So he found her and gallantly offered to carry her net and the only one she had so far managed to clean home. Shes carrying the heaviest load and he can't wait for her to clean them, after all, he's got a good appetite today! So, "hurry-up there little woman, get ye home and make my supper, you can always clean one for yourself later, and if you're good you can cook the other one for my breakfast tomorrow."

Feb 23 "silent drift-away"

The background for this piece is an up-side-down painted paper towel. I painted as many different types and brands of paper towels as i could find as they all have a different pattern for the pressing of two thin plys together to make them strong. Some were easy to peel apart, others not so easy. Some only peeled apart after painting but most were separated beforehand. They become quite strong with the addition of the paints and inks. Many were dried and then painted again, and lots were dried again and then stamped. About 25% of them had the nicer patterns and colors on the reverse side and this was one of them. I liked the way the paint made a "skin" here and there on this one. I think it was caused by the random puddling of paint against the freezer paper on which they were layed to dry.

Feb 22 How do you look?

This collage went so far off from my original intention. I added so many layers that it isnt apparent anymore that the lady was set in between partially slit open flowers and feathers on the bottom layer. I dont often use stickers but thought these were quite nice; the sparkly flowers and butterfly, the bow and crown.

Another spin art background. Sometimes i find an interesting word or phrase that sparks the idea for the art and thats what happened here. Since i scanned it i've added gold pom-poms to the caps.

Feb 20 Oriental bonsai composition

I used to have a spin - art maker thing, just like the kind they used to have at the fair. You pin the paper onto the spinner and when its spinning you drop paint onto it. This one was made on sandwich paper and thin enough to show the oriental caligraphy under it. The image is a rubber stamp colored with Big and Juicy Mountain Meadow ink. The chop is my own, carved in marble by an amazing artisan when i was in China. I've forgotten which way is up so i use it any way that appeals to me at the moment.
